Joe Donnelly has a BA (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Cork Institute of Technology and is a fully accredited member of the IACP (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). He has also completed an Integrated Specialised Tutor Training with the Social and Health Education Project (SHEP), focussing on personal development, assertive communication and stress management. Joe is committed to continuing his professional (and personal) development and in 2018 qualified as a therapist in both Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). He is currently pursuing additional certification in Somatic Experiencing (SE).
In his work with clients, Joe uses an integrative approach, combining elements of various therapies (including Person-Centred, IFS, EMDR, Gestalt, mindfulness and CBT) to address the issues brought by the client, and to suit the client's temperament and readiness to explore.
Joe's belief in the values of the person-centred approach informs all of his work. He views each client as having all of the strengths and capabilities to address their issues and to live an authentic, vital and fulfilling life. The work of therapy is then to help the client discover what may be blocking his/her access to these resources, to develop and integrate these strengths into everyday experience and to grow resilience in the face of life's challenges. The establishment of a safe, non-judgmental therapeutic space is essential in supporting this work.
