Barbara Mahon holds a B.A. from DCU, a Higher Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a Masters in Psychotherapy from DBS.
Barbara is client-focused, her aim being to work collaboratively with clients by drawing on her training and background in psycho-dynamic and person-centred approaches. Her warm, emphatic style provides a supportive environment so that clients can explore and uncover blocks that may be affecting their overall happiness and assist them find better ways to deal with the challenges they encounter in their lives. As an integrative therapist, accredited by IAHIP Barbara draws on different theoretical backgrounds to suit each individual client as well as using different practical tools within the sessions. Barbara is available primarily for long-term work with adults, but is available to work on a short-term basis also.
For Barbara, therapy provides a safe space for clients to work through the hurdles that life presents, with the relationship between the client and therapist being the key to the success of the work. As Carl Rogers, the Humanistic Psychotherapist said:
"When someone really hears you without passing judgement on you, without trying to take responsibility for you, without trying to mould you, it feels good. . . . When I have been listened to and when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world in a new way and to go on. It is astonishing how elements which seem insoluble become soluble when someone listens. How confusions which seem irremediable turn into relatively clear flowing streams when one is heard."
Barbara has a particular interest in Body Psychotherapy and in how trauma is held and released. As such, she has a particular interest in somatics, yoga and mindfulness.
